America
had it's Dwight L. Moody, England had it's Charles Haddon Spurgeon.
Spurgeon started preaching when he was still a young boy, and
printed and sold his sermons on the streets of London for a penny.
It wasn't look before the boy preacher and his penny sermons became
famous throughout England, and by the time he was twenty-one, he was
the most popular preacher in London, and possibly in Europe. He
preached to crowds of ten thousand at Exeter Hall and the Surrey
Music Hall. Then when the Metropolitan Tabernacle was built,
thousands gathered every Sunday for over forty years to hear his
lively sermons. An ardent evangelical, every sermon Spurgeon
preached reached out to lost souls and gathered them into the
kingdom of God by the thousands. When it came to saving souls for
Christ, he was the most successful evangelical preacher of his day.
In addition to his his preaching and teaching and other pastoral
duties, Spurgeon founded Sunday schools, churches, an orphanage, and
the Pastor's College. He also edited a monthly church magazine and
promoted literature distribution, especially of tracts and sermons
that he wrote.
